It seems that police officers in Santa Rosa have been paying more attention to Bicyclists and how well they fallow the rules. On Thursday afternoon the police officers of Santa Rosa began pulling over bicyclist who were breaking the law. This was an attempt to show the city of Santa Rosa the offenses committed by bicyclists. 40 people were pulled over by police for either riding against traffic, running red lights and ignoring bike lanes. Out of the 40 people pulled over 27 received citations and 13 warnings. this mainly took place around downtown, Railroad Square, the Junior College area and Mendocino Avenue.
This was all a result to the accident Liz Garcia unfortunately had. She was riding on Mendocino Avenue on the night of Oct. 22. She was riding against traffic and ran a red light. She suffered massive head injuries and died.
The article failed to mention that Liz was going home after hanging out at the belvedere, a local bar in Santa Rosa. She had had a few drinks and no helmet. She right down the street from the belvedere and only lived about 2 blocks away. She was intoxicated and was unable to make right decisions. She was brain dead almost instantly and was kept on life support for a day so that family members could say good bye to her. I know this because Liz was my sisters friends best friend.
I actually believe it is safer to ride against traffic because you can see the cars in front of you. I don't wear a helmet while riding my bike, which I know I should, and I don't always use the bike lane. I still haven't had any accidents on my bike. I think a major reason for her accident was because she was drinking. She was very young and had such a long life to live. I guess this is a lesson in both Bicycle safety and drinking. Be Smart.
